The Runner’s Kitchen turns 2!

As the days grow shorter and we inch closer to marathon season, our team tempo workouts have been increasing in length. These long “grinding” efforts improve endurance, increase V02 max, sharpen pace recognition, and make us mentally tough. I had a hunch that this week would include the infamous 2 x 4 mile continuous tempo run. The first 4 miles are supposed to be run at marathon pace and the second 4 miles are supposed to be run at half-marathon pace.

Looking back on the previous times I did this workout  – in February (59:28) and in April (1:00:05), my goal was to run faster. I feel like I’m in better shape now and with almost perfect weather, there would be no excuses. I did end up running faster than last time, but my second loop ended up being only 15 seconds faster than the first. Goal for next time: Negative split by at least 40 seconds. Onwards and upwards!

  • 2.75 mile warm-up
  • ~4.04 miles @ marathon pace – 29:15 (7:14 pace)
  • ~4.04 miles @ half-marathon pace – 29:00 (7:11 pace)
  • ~8.08 miles in 58:15
  • 2.75 mile cool-down
  • Total: 13.5 miles

How did I fuel and refuel yesterday? About 3 hours before the workout I stopped by Jamba Juice for a coffee craze smoothie. This drink is high in sugar/carbs and low in fiber – probably the opposite of what most dieticians would advise. But you know what? It’s perfect fuel for a post-work long run! When the plan is to run 13+ miles, you need carbs and calories (not fiber…trust me on that one!). I paired my smoothie with a granola bar and was set until I was able to grab a very late dinner (9pm!). After the workout I imbibed in some beers. Did you know that unfiltered wheat beers have lots of B-vitamins? Well, now you do :)

Happy 2 years, Megan! You’ve done quite a bit since you started… feel proud, lady!

Let’s see… I’m probably most proud that I picked myself up after a potentially traumatic first job experience.

  • Irene

Congratulations! In the past two years I guess the single biggest accomplishment was passing my qualifying exams for the graduate program. That suuuuccckkked at the time, but I’m glad I passed on the first try. Maybe I can work on an athletic goal this year.

  • http://runnersfuel.blogspot.com Michele

My greatest accomplishment is how I am becoming a better runner with each stride I take. I know I will make my goal of completing my first 1/2 marathon next yar, because of my training. This is my greatest acccomplishment. Plus, I love home baked cookies!

  • http://marathonmaiden.wordpress.com Karyn

noooooooooooo! don’t talk about the days getting shorter! hahah. i don’t want winter to be here

hmmmm biggest accomplishment? graduating college after putting myself through it as well as finding a job/apartment/”real life” right afterward. it’s something i’m incredibly proud of because 5 years ago i had no idea if any of it was possible

  • http://lwxyz.wordpress.com Laura

Thanks for 2 years of great blog reading!

The accomplishment I am most proud of has to do with racing Ironman WI last year. However, though I am very proud of finishing, that is not what I am most proud of. Through all of my effort in training and racing, I FINALLY inspired my couch potato husband to get off of the couch and get moving! He quit smoking and is currently training for his second triathlon this year, a half-ironman. So I guess I would say I am most proud of him!

  • http://runlittlelegs.wordpress.com/ Katie from Run Little Legs!

I just started following your blog. Happy 2 year blogiversary! Also — I ran the NYC half last spring, too! Great race until you get to the West Side Highway. Probably the worst three miles of my life. Doesn’t help I trained like poo, either.

happy birthday, runner’s kitchen! two years – that’s a long life in blogland!

i am most proud of my ability to, um, roll with the punches? it’s been a turbulent two years (professionally, personally, socially) but i think I’ve managed to stick it out and find a state of contentment with who i was, am, and where i wanna be. corny, yeah, but whatever :)

    happy friday megan!!

  • courtney

i think my biggest accomplishment was running my first half marathon – which was also my first time running in the rain :)

    congrats on 2 years!

  • http://gingerjul.blogspot.com Jul

    Happy 2! :)

It’s hard to pick one thing (and it isn’t easy to brag in ‘public,’ either) – but I am so proud of myself for graduating from college, moving to a new city, and finding a great job and wonderful roommates all within a few months. I took a leap of faith in accepting a summer internship, knowing that I might not have anywhere to go at the end, and was fortunate enough to receive a job offer after several months. I moved in with strangers I found on Craigslist, and was fortunate enough to find friends. I started running, began working out again, and learned to love cooking.

In short, I think, I began to grow up. It’s been quite an adventure. I’m looking forward to many more to come.

  • http://www.eating-for-england.com/ Angharad

Happy birthday! I love reading your blog – it’s one of the few that I genuinely look forward to and it’s one of the very first I ever read! Keep up the wunderbar work.

  • http://lizrunsdc.com Liz @ lizrunsdc

Happy Blog anniversary! I love reading your old posts. I’m most proud of my first triathlon (especially because I suck at swimming)

  • http://www.firstclasspanda.com Laura

I Really love your blog! Congratulations on 2 whole years. Thanks so much for posting some of your favorites, it was great to see your Boston Recap… and also how it felt to not be running in a race that you had to defer. I’m injured right now and it’s nice to see that races skipped can be hard to face, but there will always be another one.

The accomplishment that I’m most proud of is learning to step out of my comfort zone: I began to race when I was slow, I joined a team with strangers, I tried classes at the gym that I never would have usually done, I swam in open water when it still remains as my biggest fear, and so far I’m still here alive and kicking.

  • http://www.firednfabulous.com/ Ellen@FirednFabulous

Whoa, girl, HOMEMADE COOKIES?! You know my ears just perked up. Well, I’d have to say that I’m most proud of my ability to be resilient. I lost my job last year, and even though it’s been hard as hell, I’m still making. I’m still HERE. In this friggin crazy crazy city. There have been plenty of tears and I-can’t-do-this-anymore moments, but I’ve managed to pick myself up every single time, put a smile on my face and carry on. If that doesn’t deserve a cookie, I don’t know what does! ;)

  • http://jenisgreen.com Jen @ Jen is Green

Happy 2 Year anniversary! Love the blog. :-)

  • http://washingtonranhere.wordpress.com sarah

Happy happy! Those old posts are awesome. Nice rehydration tactics.

I’m pretty proud of how I managed to quit my job and get into grad school. Next step: real employment!

  • Maren

Happy two year anniversary! My biggest accomlishment is learning how to cook! and loving it! Two years ago I was eating special k for breakfast, a sandwich with chips for lunch, and a ….Lean Pocket for dinner. OMG. I wouldn’t touch a Lean Pocket with a three foot stick!

congrats again! Your blog is GREAT!!

  • http://greensandjeans.wordpress.com Madeline – Greens and Jeans

Two years?! Amazing!!! Lets see, probably my best accomplishment in the past two years is really getting “me” figured out. I am at a good place with my running/eating, even though I don’t have a job that I like, I know the industry I want to work in, and I’m hopefully gearing up for a big life/job move. Phew!

  • http://runningcupcake.co.uk Maria runningcupcake

    Congrats and happy bloggy birthday!
My greatest achievement in the last 2 years is taking up running and loving it! I have run several 5k races (to raise money for race for life cancer research UK), some 10ks, and this year two half marathons! Something I never thought I would do! So I have proved to myself I can do more than I thought if I put my mind to it!
    Maria :)

  • http://www.marcigilbert.com Marci

Happy Birthday Runner’s Kitchen! I need to read some of your fave posts when I have more time.
Biggest fitness accomplishment of last two years is increasing my distance to 10K and running two races. Personal accomplishment is having the guts to start my own blog and keep writing what I’d like to read!

  • Connie

I took the plunge and challenged myself to running my first half marathon last year..and when you are 60 years old that is a big challenge. I had run 5ks for about 10 years and a few 10ks the last several years, but not anything this far. It was in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge in southwest Oklahoma. Not only were there hills-but we also had a tropical storm named Olaf to run in. They said we would be seeing wild animals like buffalo while running it-but the weather was so bad we didn’t even see much of the hills we were running through. Not only did I finish (2:22) but I won first in my age group. I cried when they told me.

  • Felicity

My favorite accomplishment was running 38:49 for my FIRST EVER 10k at the ACC outdoor T&F championships last May! and then running a big 5k PR of 18:13 two weeks later! It was definitely a break-through season for me :)

    Happy blogiversary!
    Felicity

  • http://thewholeplate.com leslie

congratulations on 2 years lady! i’ve got to go poke around your archives now. :)

hmm. these past two years, i think i am most proud of having guts – enough to decide to change careers and end up in this job that i love, enough to know i’d be ok when my knees fell apart and leading me to discover yoga, and enough to put myself out there time and again, making me a heck of a lot more confident. it’s been a wild two years, but i’ve grown so, so much.

  • Cellabella

I can’t believe it’s been 2 years! Your running philosophy has always been inspiring :)

I think what I’m most proud of these past 2 years is being on the road to recovery from my eating disorder. Not that it’s been all uphill, but when I look at how far I’ve come since two years ago, even I can’t help patting myself on my back ;)

  • Sara

    Congratulations!

My biggest accomplishment is graduating from college and finding a way to use my degree to help others. And everyone always said religious studies would never land me a job. ha.

  • http://lakocinera.blogspot.com Kocinera

Congratulations on two years! I’ve only recently discovered your blog, but I love reading about your running–keeps me motivated. Plus I’ve gotten some great snack ideas!

I think what I’m most proud of in the past two years is transitioning from high school to college. Even though there’s been plenty of challenges, I feel like I’ve really grown as a person and have a better understanding of what I want in life.

  • Sveta

Biggest acomplishment – in two months i will have run 3 full marathons in a year!

Congrats on the 2 year blog-a-versary!

  • http://www.meetup.com/UrbanFeet Gaurav

Congratulations on 2 years! I am celebrating 2 years of moving to NYC and finding a group of fun people to run with in Central Park.

In these 2 years I ran my first marathon in Hartford CT (4:20) followed by Philadelphia (3:56) and last month the San Francisco (3:40).

But the accomplishment I’m most proud of is being the organizer of Urban Feet – the friendliest social running group in the park and inspiring my Dad, Wife and others friends to believe that they too can do this Marathon thing.

  • http://ribbonsroadsandraspberries.wordpress.com Caroline

Great workout! Wowwww that’s such a while to go that pace.

Agreed on fiber before runs = no-go. I have a pretty high tolerance now, but big salads and cruciferous veggies will put me in PAIN. Happy birthday…can’t wait to read through the old posts :) .

Biggest accomplishment in the last two years…maybe getting into Princeton (we can forget about Yale, Harvard, and Williams)…or getting my breast cancer research from last summer published as part of my lab’s paper (I’m third author!) in June. We found that the expression of a certain protein in breast cancer cells caused them to resist chemotherapy treatment and the next step is to develop drugs that inhibit that protein.

  • http://sarahcraft.blogspot.com/ Sarah

Giving birth to my second daughter, Claudia. I can’t wait for the day my girls can run with me!!

  • Mikaela

My greatest accomplishment in the last two years has definitely been the wild series of events that led me to where I am today: separating from my (now) ex, moving myself and my soon-to-be 3 year old son to a new state (with no family or friends anywhere in sight) to begin my doctoral education, and perhaps the greatest part being that I learned that I was not nearly as co-dependent as I once thought. I learned that I can (and do) play the role of single mom/student/graduate assistant very well and still stay somewhat sane. Now, that’s an accomplishment :)

  • sals

Congrats! Two years is a long time. This question made me think – I am proud of a lot of grad school-related things… but I think I am most proud of being a good friend to people that I care so much about – and feel lucky to have them in my life!

  • Ellie

Hey girl congrats on 2 years! I am most proud of getting into medical school!

  • Megan

Congrats Megan! Keep it comin! Hmmm best accomplishment..living my dream and studying/living abroad for 1 year!

  • Allie

happy birthday to you and your blog! i love reading! in the past two years i am most proud of running again after surgery for a really bad stress fracture in my hip. i am also grateful for this.

  • http://nyflygirl.wordpress.com nyflygirl

Congrats on your 2-year blogoversary! I’ve read your blog on and off for awhile and like it a lot!

Hmmm…accomplishment most proud of from the last 2 years-I’d say NYCM 2008. Was my 2nd marathon, and not only did I get my “stretch” time goal instead of my “safe” time goal, but I was really proud of the race execution-there’s nothing better than still actually feeling strong at mile 26! :)

  • Morgan McStravick

I’m so glad I stumbled upon this blog a year and a half ago! You kept me inspired to keep running while I studied abroad this past year!

I would say my proudest moment was when I finished running the Dublin marathon this year (my first!) in 3:35:45, despite being PUSHED into the Seine River 3 weeks before during a run in Paris!

Keep up the running and blogging, Megan!

  • http://www.nutritionnutontherun.com Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run]

How did you score a gig writing for Glamour!?

  • http://thedailyoatmeal.wordpress.com Megan

I’m most proud of not blaming my body for the injuries I’ve suffered this year. I had to take a hard look at what I was doing and what I needed to do different to stay healthy and run for many years :)

    Happy blog-a-versary!

  • http://www.KatieHeddleston.com Katie @ Healthy Heddleston

In the past two years I am proud of a lot of things.. but last year I finished my Masters and got married all within one month. Then two months later I took my RD exam and am official :)

  • http://healthyfitmama.wordpress.com Emily (Healthy Fit Mama)

    Happy 2nd year!

My greatest accomplishment over the last 2 years is my daughter! She was born in March 2009. I never knew how strong I was until I gave birth! Since then, I’ve felt like I can take on anything. Now, I’m training for my first ever half marathon. Perhaps over the next 2 years, I’ll become a marathoner…

  • http://eatmovelove.wordpress.com eatmovelove

    Crazy times! Wow.

The last 2 years have been disastrous…so probably just being able to stay through the ups and many, many downs the best I can and hoping for a future.

  • http://www.karathon.com Kara (@ Kara’s Marathon)

    Happy blog birthday!! :D

My greatest accomplishment in the past two years is leaving a job that was physically and emotionally draining…unfortunately, I’m now in another draining job, but I’m still glad I left job #1!

  • http://goanniecatgo.blogspot.com/ Annie Cat

Congrats on two years! I wish you many more.

What I’m most proud of in the last two years? Being mama to a not-quite-two-year-old boy. And after that? Starting running again, with a new focus and dedication that has led to my taking minutes off my “easy pace” and my going for the Chicago Marathon in 6 weeks.

Your “kitchen sink” cookies from last fall would be much appreciated!

  • Katie

I just discovered this blog and it is awesome. In the last 2 years, I began marathoning and finished my first year of teaching, and I am still alive! Woo hoo!

  • http://frontyardfoodie.com Diana @ frontyardfoodie

Congrats on two years blogging! Yay for you! I love your blog and read it religiously.

  • Jacqui

Can I be really cheesy and say joining CPTC and making lots of new awesome friends because of it (including you!)? I was definitely very intimidated when I first thought about joining, but ultimately I’m always satisfied with the outcome when I try new things, and this was no exception.

  • http://lifediscombobulated.blogspot.com Katie @ LifeDiscombobulated

Congrats on 2 years! : ) That’s awesome!!! The accomplishment I’m most proud of in the last two years is my Masters degree and acceptance to a PhD program.

  • Courtney Sanders

Congrats on 2 years of blogging! Love it- so many fun tips.

My biggest accomplishment in the last 2 years was completing my dietetic internship and passing my Registered Dietitian exam! Yay!

  • http://www.stellashopper.com Nicole

My greatest accomplishment was running 2:10 in a practice marathon while 7 months pregnant. I hope to soon do this on a certified course and surprise the heck out of everyone:)

  • EmilyK

This is a fun question and made me realize how lucky I am! I’ve done a lot in two years. The top of the list is graduated from college, completed year one of grad school, moved to a new city all by myself, and ran a marathon.
