Dear August

Happy Monday! I was a little MIA from social media this weekend, but only because I was busy running lots of miles and eating yummy food. After Thursday’s beastly tempo workout I was feelin’ a little beat up, so I took it nice and easy on Friday and completed a 7-mile recovery run.

Running in the morning left the evening wide open for relaxation and a home-cooked dinner. I feel like I don’t consume nearly enough omega-3’s, so I picked up some wild coho salmon (on sale!) and made it the star of my dinner. I sort of winged it and cooked it in a foil packet. 8 oz fillet of salmon + dollop of pesto + foil packet + 400 degree oven for 10 minutes = dinner!

Alongside my salmon I hit up the carbs via baby red potatoes roasted and tossed in pesto. Perfect pre-long run fuel πŸ™‚

My fruit & veg intake had been a little sparse that day, so instead of having ice cream for dinner (wahh), I sliced up fresh figs and ate them along with some greek yogurt and a crumbled granola bar. It took incredible will power to eat fruit & yog for dessert – that’s usually not how I roll – but I’m trying to eat a little “cleaner” since I’m training pretty intensly. Food = fuel!

I woke up bright and early on Saturday a.m. in order to do my long run. I felt a little lame going to bed at 10pm on Friday night and drinking Gatorade instead of a beer, but sometimes a girl’s gotta sacrifice.

I fueled up with a sliced peach, Fage greek yogurt, and a crumbled granola bar. Yeah, I realize I eat this combo a lot. Go with what works. I had coffee too – even if it goes unpictured, I always, always, always have a cup o’ joe in the a.m.

Despite some lingering fatigue from Thursday’s mega miles, I felt surprisingly good. I ran from my apt, met Kelly at the Engineer’s Gate, enjoyed her company for ~10 miles, ran solo for a mile, and then spotted my co-worker Elise on the west side. We ran together for the last few miles and the time flew by. I felt relaxed and easy the whole time – the weather was gorgeous!! 65 degrees and sunny. I had a few clif shot bloks and some water fountain sips during the middle miles and it worked out well. My Nike+ pedometer told me that I ran ~19 miles in 2:38:34 (~8:20 pace). This seems almost too good to be true, but in the past the Nike + has been fairly accurate, so I’ll take it! I always get myself SO worked up for long runs. For wheatever reason I start thinking that I won’t be able to complete the mileage and that I’m not “tough” enough to stick it for XX miles. Luckily these fears are usually unfounded, but I still feel them before nearly every long run or race!

After a much needed shower (I smelled like a homeless man, yo), compression socks, and LUNCH, Β I headed to NJ to spend some time in the ‘burbs with my friend Jess.

I was greeted with a porch swing. It was delicious and deceptive. It didn’t taste like alcohol at all and after sucking down 3/4 of this baby I was already tipsy. At 3pm in the afternoon. Yessss.

The rest of the evening involved some quality brews, rooftop stargazing, and a fab dinner.

Lambchops, mashed potatoes, and summer sweet corn.

The lamb chops were simple, yet elegant. After pan searing on both sides, they were topped with Jess’s famous thyme-shallot sauce and finished in the oven.

From the chef herself –

J-Cat’s Lamb Sauce

  • finely minced shallots (2-3?)
  • big squirt of dijon mustard
  • chopped thyme (a few sprigs)
  • Italian bread crumbs (big handful)
  • Extra virgin olive oil (generous drizzle)
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • S & P, to taste
  • Mash together with a fork until a paste forms and then add to your fav protein – lamb, fish, chicken, tofu, etc.

Sunday was a running rest day, but I still managed to channel my inner dork athlete.

The football makes me look deceptively sporty. I assure you I’m as uncoordinated as they come πŸ™‚

A little bit of yoga happened. Jess please don’t hate me for posting this photo, heh.

Some Superman ice cream was sought out and devoured. Summer on a cone.

Dear August,

I don’t think I’m ready for you to end yet.

Love, Megan

What last minute summer fun are you going to cram in before Autumn arrives?

  • Nice yoga pose-the salamba sirafootballana, aka the football head stand? hehe…what’s the recipe for that summer cocktail?!

  • I am heading to the Great NYS Fair twice this week. There is the outside possibility I may head to the Ithaca Brew Fest Saturday but transportation is iffy. Big Labor Day weekend coming up and then birthday weekend after that!

  • Fun! I am trying to swim every chance I get before it gets too cold!

  • ummmmm so i think you have the right idea for capturing summer! i don’t want august to end either. love that summer cocktail! i’m going to be trying to recreate it this weekend…which i am already looking forward to hah.

as far as what i’m doing to make summer never end…hmmm i’m going to try and cram in one more beach trip!

  • Jacqui

BEIRGARTEN! Just looked it up, and totally psyched for this coming weekend….

  • Honestly, I’m ready to say farewell to this sweltering summer and hello to fall!

I’m spending the first two weeks of September in Hawaii and my birthday is in October, so I’ve got a few selfish reasons for wishing away August… πŸ™‚

  • Lauren

I must say that it makes me feel infinitely better and more normal that even a veteran runner like you gets so nervous before a long run! I play such mental games with myself sometimes and wonder if I can complete high mileage, even though (knock on wood!) I usually end up doing better than I set out to do! Keep up your amazing hard work girly

  • I can’t wait for my long hike to be here. Probably in a couple of weeks!!

  • i adore this post. very whimsical and very megan. double win.

i want more NATURE time. i’m going upstate in two weeks which will be awesome. i forget what trees look like, ya know?

oh, and i never thought to put pesto on salmon. yum.

  • gorgeous salmon (whole foods sale, right?) and delicious looking potatoes!

Loved our run! What was our avg pace, do you think?

I’m cramming some summer in this weekend with my trip to Boston and coastal NH – hopefully the weather cooperates. Then I’m ready for fall, yo!

  • Looks like you had the best weekend! Perfect balance of being active, eating healthy AND indulging πŸ™‚ I neeeed a trip to the lake before summer is officially over. Not sure if it’s gonna happen though!

  • I am SO ready for summer to end. The heat here in Arizona sucks and I’m ready for a break!

  • wow, that salmon and potato meal with pesto looks SO good! i hope to get some wakeboarding in before it gets too cold.

  • That ice cream looks amazing!! πŸ™‚

Next weekend is gonna have a bit of summer fun for me-US Open and the New Haven 20K!

I had bought the US Open tix back in June-and was thinking “do I really have to think about the end of the summer already?”

  • Mmm, that Porch Swing looks delicious! Now I have a craving for summer cocktails, though I’ve declared this healthy week (gym instead of bar) πŸ™‚

  • I’m trying to get the last bit of summer into my life but I’m due to have a baby in a couple days and it’s hard getting out much! I did take a nice walk in the heat today and ate a Popsicle. So good.

  • Gavin

Any thoughts on the accuracy of the Nike Sport Band? ps the potatoes looked amazing.

  • Diana

Hi, I have been following your blog for a little while now. I used to live near NYC and am an avid multisport athlete. I have since moved to cape cod where it is flat as a pancake! Training hills is out of the question most places. What kind of granola bars do you crumble over your yogurt? They look like a perfect mix; not too crunchy, not too chewy’. Just curious! Thanks.

  • I’m actually a major homebody/grandma so sometimes it’s nice to have an early morning long run as an excuse for why I’m staying in on a Friday night, lol. Yep – I’m lame.

  • I do a similar salmon and it’s a fave! I have some new potatoes, and am going to attempt your recipe tomorrow. yum!
We’re going to go on one last mtn. biking weekend before the SNOW hits – crazy, but it’ll be here before we know it.

  • Diana – the granola bars are the new Clif bar crunch variety. I love them!

  • I agree with you about August–I don’t want it to end! I have yet to get ice cream/frozen yogurt and eat it outside, so I think I’m going to do that tonight πŸ™‚
Random question but what watch/timer do you use during your workouts and long runs?

  • Jessicat

Oh meg, I would never kill you for posting THAT photo (in fact, i kind of don’t mind/love that I look like a stink-bug). Now, if you would have posted the one where I actually look like a line-backer…well, then we’d have problems.

For the record, I’m a little dismayed that the hot n’ spicy peanuts from sunny Newark, NJ didn’t make the cut….

  • Wow!
    Superman ice-cream?
    Count me in!

  • Phew, I thought I was the only one who worked my self up into a frenzy before long runs … unfortunately for me though, I have yet to master that frenzy into NOT sending my belly into a war! How do you overcome those nerves?

  • Awesome run! I must say the fish with pesto looks awesome. I don’t eat fish too much, but I love pesto! OH, and I’m SO ready for August to be over πŸ™‚ I’m so sick of the heat.
