Long runs make me hungry

After our team championship race and a few beers with this gal -

I was a little worried about how I’d feel on an early morning long run. Fortunately, Sunday’s 15-ish miler turned out decently. To fuel up, I ate a Clif z bar around 5:30am and then went back to sleep for a few more minutes. Eating a huge breakfast right before a long run doesn’t work for me, so I always have a big bedtime snack the night before. It helps top off my carbohydrate stores and allows me ample time for digestion.

I started off from my apt and then met up with Shelby after about 2.75 miles. My legs felt wayyy tired on our first mile together (uphill, bridle path), but considerably better after that. Thanks to my running buddy’s new Garmin, we were able to keep track of our pace and kept it at a decent clip. I ran the last 1/2 mile at marathon pace (~7:45). I was running out of gas at that point, but I think it’s good practice to get my legs used to the fatigue they’ll feel in the later miles of the marathon. Total for the day: 15 miles in 2:05:07 (~8:20 pace). Ran 56 miles over the last 6 days. Boom.

I ended my run at Whole Foods and immediately downed this guy – organic coffee, milk, sugar, and chocolate. It was similar to chocolate milk – one of my fav recovery drinks!

My brunch of choice was french toast made with whole wheat flax bread, peanut butter, banana, and maple syrup.

Followed up by at least half a dozen figs topped with peanut butter. I don’t think I could be a runner without peanut butter. YUM.

After showering, I put on my new CEP recovery socks. Lime green compression socks, so hot right now.

I snacked all afternoon long -

And then started on an early dinner around 5:30pm. I roasted some CSA fennel and onion (drizzled in EVOO, roasted at 400 F for 20 minutes).

And chopped up a cucumber and a gorgeous red tomato. Love, love, love in season tomatoes!

I made a simple dish that will last me a few meals this week – whole wheat cous cous, chickpeas, fennel, onion, cucumber, tomato, parsley, and feta cheese. This is a really great meal to have on for a hot summer night and you can customize it according to what veggies you have on hand!

And of course, I ended the night with ice cream. I’ve been loving Breyer’s Mint Chocolate Chip lately. I can pronounce and recognize all of the ingredients – yay!

And now….a Monday GIVE-AWAY! Woo. Jason Natural Products sent me some goodies to sample and now you have a chance to try them out. I’m giving away a bottle of cranberry body/foot lotion, SPF 45 sunscreen, and a ped-egg (just because I think it’s fun!). After a few months of enjoying the summer sun, sand, and water we could all use a little TLC. To win – tell me your most fun outdoor moment that you’ve had this summer. I’ll pick a winner on Wednesday, August 11th.

I swear I was still hungry on Sunday from Saturday’s 17 miles. I have been eating, snacking almost non-stop since I finished that up. Kind of scares me as to what I will have to eat in recovery of the upcoming marathon.

So far one of my most fun times this summer was running in Utica’s Boilermaker 15K. Not only was the crowd of runners amazing (over 11,000 started, over 13,000 registered) but the community support just blew my mind. There were spectators everywhere. I loved it!! Of course, the after party at FX Matt Brewery was a big plus, too – dancing to help the legs recover and beer. Perfect!

My most memorable outdoor moment this summer was during a trip to D.C. with my boyfriend. It had rained the first evening we were there and at about 8 it slowed so we went to checkout the monuments at night. They were so beautiful and deserted, which in the following days I learned was very rare! After, we ventured toward George Washington University to find ice cream or coffee, not knowing that next to nothing in D.C. is open at night! After about an hour and a half of wandering we decided to follow the people still out to wherever they were going. We ended up in Dupont Circle where we found ice cream! It was a great night and even though I didn’t fit in a run that day I definitely walked enough to earn my mint chocolate chip ice cream!

My most fun outdoor experience this summer was definitely getting up at 4:30am to run and watch the sunrise along some beautiful trails, meeting a bunny rabbit, followed by an afternoon spent in the park snacking and reading trashy magazines with my friends…bliss!

My most fun summer moment was going to the jersey shore for the first time!

  • http://mealsformiles.wordpress.com/ Kelly

Nice running! And a belated congrats on the race and your super speediness! Excited to meet up soon for a run too!

I don’t think I could be a runner without peanut butter either, for sure. Hmm, most fun outdoor moment(s) – trips to the beach, probably. Although my 16 mi long run last weekend is right up there too – I heart Riverside Park, and it was a perfect run :)

So far my most fun outdoor moment would be running my first 15K in July, the Boilermaker in Utica. Challenging, but so much fun. :-D

My most fun outdoor moment this summer was a few weeks ago when I was in CO visiting my parents at their place. My mom didn’t like the class at the gym that morning, and I had a track workout to do and suggested she come along and just run around the track. (She ran a lot when she was younger, but after a few injuries has cut it down to 2ish days per week – gym exercise the other 5 days.) We biked together to the track closest to us (~5mi away) and as I set off on my 6×800, she decided to first run a mile time trial and then she did 3 800s! I don’t think many of my friends can say that their 50 year old mothers did a track workout with them. I was so proud of her!!! She’s in amazing shape & has always been an inspiration.

ps – yesterday I had oatmeal with pb in the morning, a banana with pb at lunch, and an apple with pb before bed. I love it, too!!

Nice 15-miler! I’m the same with pre-run meals; I just can’t stomach much, and I’ve found the Z bars sit well.

My favorite summer outdoor moment actually happened yesterday. I went to Lollapalozza (a 3-day concert event) in Chicago yesterday. It was a blazing 90 degrees, but I got to dance and sing and sweat to some of my all time favorite bands all in one space :)

Congrats on the championship! You rocked it!

I love clif z bars, especially the peanut butter!

  • Maren

Congrats on the PR this weekend! I also could not live without PB! It is the best go-to for energy!…and I can’t go a day without some Dark Chocolate Dreams. And I have you to thank for the introduction! :) The most fun thing I did this summer is a toss-up between floating down the Niobrara River this past weekend or my 100+ family reunion the weekend before!

High five on the running action this week! That dinner looks definitely like something up my alley…love customizable summer salads!

Fun giveaway! My favourite outdoor moment of the summer so far has been watching July 4th fireworks from my friend’s boat on a lake in Wisconsin and jumping in to swim!

I went for a wonderful trail run with friends earlier in the summer — so hot and humid, but so worth it!

Thanks for the recipe – this gives me an idea for my fennel bulb!

My favorite outdoor moment this summer was floating down a coldwater (65-70 degree?) creek on a 100 degree day, in a remote area of SC, and spotting two turkey vultures in the trees overhead. My boyfriend and I tried to be quiet as we got closer, but they heard us when we bumped into some brush near the bank and flew off, making about as much noise as if their wings were made of window screens!

My most fun summer moment was probably mountain biking in Sedona with my best friend who I hadn’t seen in two years!!

you are a distance champion! I’ve been a big running slacker lately and definitely need to get back into it. I’ve been a blogging slacker as well and am hoping that reading about you training for NYC will help me get motivated to get back to running again.

my favorite outdoor moment this summer:
i have a share house on fire island in the town of kismet. it is a small, friendly community with town-wide activities. every summer someone hosts a guacamole and margarita competition on the beach! it is a great late-afternoon tradition to sample so many different varieties of guacamole, chips, and drinks!

In all honesty, my most amazing summer moment was the 11-miler I ran on Saturday. I have never felt so good on a run, and had so much fun, and been so blessed by a gorgeous day and a gorgeous route and a wonderful running buddy.
I’m new to running (training for first marathon, started running in Sept 09) and to feel so strong, and powerful, and prepared for Saturday’s run was…. life-changing. Seriously.

  • Sarah

Favorite summer moment: climbing to the peak of Maine’s Mt. Katadin on July 1…and enduring the SLEET – not fun at the time, but I won’t forget it anytime soon! A great adventure….

  • Marci

Hiking in Death Valley two weeks ago! My husband decided to do a short “fun run” along part of the Badwater route just to say he did it. I think we may have to start assembling a crew so that he can do the real deal in a few years! :)

(I did not have the fortitude or motivation to run in 116 degree heat)

  • Tyler

I love peanut butter. I may be addicted.

My favorite summer moment was my tubing trip with friends! Nothing better than floating down a river with friends with coolers hooked to your tubes :)

  • http://drtrirunner.com Erika @ Dr.TriRunner

    I. NEEED. those socks!! No joke – I’ve been looking for those all summer. The neon green ones specifically. And CANT FIND THEM. Grrrrr….

My favorite summer moment so far is a tie: I would have said hands down farmers market, but I had the best open water swim of my life yesterday at the lake practically out my backdoor. It was 50 minutes of clear, still water, sunny gloriousness!

  • http://crunchygranolagal.wordpress.com crunchy granola gal

sad that i have to think on this one… hmm… picnic with a couple friends in central park? with wine of course! yeah, that’s up there.

you are tackin’ on maaad miles! i am ridiculously hungry when i run eight miles or more in a day. eight is the magic number: that means i need to eat like, five large meals. it’s awesome.

  • http://washingtonranhere.wordpress.com sarah

That couscous looks awesome. I always have delayed onset hunger – I’m starving the day after my long runs. Annoying.

Sooo…my favorite moment of the summer was probably watching a random brass band play in Central Park with my friend Adam. We were just chilling, and suddenly heard this music, and there was a big old band! It was awesomely random.

    Megan,
I love your blog – I was running my long run (albiet much slower than you) in CP Saturday am and I think i saw you! You go! It was so fun to watch the team championship runners as I was running! Again, I love the blog – makes me realize other 25 year olds in the city give up Friday nights for long runs too (and then enjoy Saturday nights even more – obvi!)

  • Megan

My fave moment this summer will have to be waking up early in San Francisco on a Sunday morning and doing the 8 mile hike over the Marin Headlands!! Gorgeous views of the Golden Gate bridge and Pacific Ocean! That was definitely a highlight of my super fun filled vacation:)

  • http://www.princessofpavement.com Katie

Oh yay, I’m not the only one who goes for the bright compression socks! Just bought me some hot pink ones and while all my non-runner peeps are giving me a hard time about them, I’m loving them!

  • http://runnersfuel.blogspot.com Michele

My best fun in the summer sun was all the hiking I’ve been doing and all the running on the weekeneds! I love summer sunshine.

I LOVE peanut butter, too. I put it in everything I can think of.
One of the best things this summer was just yesterday. It was hot here…heat index of 107 degrees! I was at the pool with my best friend’s son. It was just him and I. I told him he could go play with his friends, but he declined and told me that this was the best pool trip ever! Gotta love the kid for that!

My best memory was this Sunday, when the hubby and I packed a gourmet picnic and sat around the lake to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and then getting caught in the rain! Romantic!

  • Sara

My favorite moment outside this year has been definitely going to Bryant Park for outdoor yoga…what a great workout and getting some sun!

  • steph

my favorite outdoor moment of this year was a 15 miler on trail with some of the boys of my running club. It was awesome in so many ways…
    1) it was my first long run after being injuried for since Dec 2009. It felt so good to run long and somewhat fast after several months of elliptical and pool running
    2) awesome conversation with old and new friends…. the running club consists of so to be engineers ( college kids)… so lots of geeky jokes… plus so deep conversation regarding energy consumption… plus there were the obligatorily conversations about yummy food (:P).
    3) wildlife and terrain… we saw deer and crossed streams … plus I discovered that one of my friends has a completely irrational fear of ticks
    4) sense of self… the trail run with the boys was just so satisfying because i’ve run with the group for a couple of years… they made me strong enough to run marathons and ultras competitively… then I got hurt and i wasn’t able to run with the group for a while , i was devastated that i’d lose my speed and strength…. on this run it was kind of a wake up call for me – i didn’t lose all my strength and speed.. and there was something more to running than just strength and speed… it was about the friends that you make during the run.

  • Vanessa

Great Job on the mileage!! You inspire me! Anyways, my favorite summer memory was when my mom and brother were in MN for the Mayo CLinic. SHe tried to make the trip as fun as possible considering it for the Dr. appointments so she took us kayaking! I’ll never forget it!! However, greater than that was hearing the Doctors say my brother is now doing fine!!!

  • Janine

First, I share your addiction to PB. Tried my first jar of dark chocolate dreams and ate the entire jar in 4 days. Yikes! My favorite summer moment was in Punta Cana in late June, building tall sand castles with my kids at the waters edge – just perfect!

  • Elliott

My best moment this summer was introducing my baby bulldog to the dog beach. She was *tearing* around, smelling everything, and trying to steal frisbees out of the air. Then she saw the water, went running in until neck-deep, realized she was a bulldog and couldn’t swim and went streaking out. :)
